Missions Sunday Preview

Missions Sunday is coming up on June 29! In recent years, our Missions Sundays have been in October. So, why June this year? It’s simple: more of our missionaries will be back in Wichita to participate in June than in October.

Our Sunday morning services will have a missions focus and Sunday evening we will host our 2nd annual “Trip Around the World.” Let me tell you more about both!

Sunday morning, our special guest speaker will be Dr. Tite Tiénou. Dr. Tiénou is Senior Vice President of Education, Professor of Theology of Mission, and Academic Dean at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and has been a member of Trinity’s faculty since 1997. He is originally from Ivory Coast and has served as a pastor in Burkina Faso as well.

I had the privilege of taking Dr. Tienou’s Theology of Missions course when I was at TEDS. He is a great speaker and brilliant thinker, full of experience and passion for God’s work among the nations. I particularly enjoyed hearing about the role he has played in helping Africans write their own theology books, which shows the success of missions in many African countries.

Many of our missions partners will also be here Sunday morning with tables in the Courtyard and will speak in various classes. We already have commitments from the Shobergs, Conners, Sam and Julie, Justin Rolfs, Leslie Girk and many of our local missions partners.

Sunday evening is our “Trip Around the World” beginning at 5:30. The Chinese church will prepare a wonderful dinner for us, and then many of our basement classrooms will be transformed into different countries where you’ll have the chance to meet some of our missions partners and learn about their ministries and the different cultures where they serve. You’ll need a special “passport” to enter those “countries,” but be careful, as there could be secret agents roaming the halls to make sure you are not illegally doing ministry!

You’ll be able to stop by the table in the Corridor near the church offices June 15 or 22 to reserve your spot. The cost is $3 per person or maximum of $10 per family. Childcare is available through age 4 after the dinner. Spaces are limited so don’t wait to sign up.

Update: Spaces for this event are all filled, but you can call the church office or email Pastor Curt to be to be put on a waiting list.

Missions Sunday is a great way for you to see how God will use you in his plan for the nations. Could you join one of our missionary care teams? Will you pick up one of our missionary prayer calendars? Would you go on one of our short-term trips? Is God calling you to move overseas? Come learn about all these possibilities, and we’ll see what the Lord does at First Free on June 29!
